I like fantasy. I like movies about magic and spaceships and ghosts. Movies about ordinary life, on the other hand, generally aren’t my thing, considering that’s what I watch movies to get away from. So for a while, I didn’t know why I kept ranking Frances Ha so highly among my favorite movies; I just knew I liked it that much. Eventually I was able to put it into words: of cinema’s many windows into ordinary life, Frances Ha was my favorite because I wanted my experience of ordinary life to feel like how Frances Ha felt.
